Ancestor Mask, lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea - 3907 $225.00

Ancestor Mask, lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea - 3907

Most masks in New Guinea are not worn over the face but are hung in or outside ceremonial men’s houses or attached to large dance costumes. They can depict sprits or family, clan, & tribal ancestors-often with totemic animals on the forehead or chin. This mask is from the lower Sepik village of Imbaundo. The image on the forehead is a flying fox, which figures prominently in the art of this village. It is 29.25 inches tall and decorated with cassowary feathers. Painted with clay, charcoal, and lime-based paints. #3907 Imbaundo village, lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
