Basketry Yam Mask, Wosera, Papua New Guinea

These masks are ancestral spirit images used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the Yam Harvest Festival. Yams grown for eating are normal sized, however, ceremonial yams can be up to 12 feet or more long. The Babamini are used to decorate these huge yams. A nice big mask that was used in more than one yam cycle. 19.5 inches tall. It was exhibited in the show: The Ethereal World of the Spirits: Tribal Art of New Guinea at Augustana College in the fall of 2007 #7928 Maprik and Wosera area, Papua New Guinea
