Ceremonial Artifact – Spirit Board, #7959 $350.00

Ceremonial Artifact – Spirit Board, #7959

This unique gopi board is from a village in the Papuan Gulf region of New Guinea. The brightly colored design of the ceremonial spirit board features a human face, most likely that of an ancestor.

These traditional tribal boards are used during the initiation ceremony for young boys. The young man’s uncle hand carves the board, names it and then dances with it during the initiation ceremony. The board is then used to guard clan areas.

The design of this gopi is unique to the Purari Delta vicinity.

This gopi measures 47.5 inches tall and 9.25 inches wide.
