New Guinea Artifacts – Middle Sepik River Phallocrypt, #8211ls

This phallocrypt from the Iatmul people of the middle Sepik River, region features strips of red, white, black and yellow bush twine.

Phallocrypts were once the sole form of clothing worn by men in the villages of Papua New Guinea. While still worn by some men in remote villages of New Guinea and Indonesia, the decorative sheaths are now used mostly for ceremonial events and as collector pieces for travelers.

These sheaths are typically made from the ends of dried gourds and usually decorate them with paint, bush twine, seeds and shells.

This gourd measures 10 inches long with an opening diameter of 1.25 inches.
