New Guinea Art – Ceremonial Spirit Board, #7960

This colorful spirit board is from the Purari Delta area of the Papuan Gulf.

Still made and used by New Guinea gulf tribes, these gopi boards are traditionally used in initiation ceremonies for young boys. Each one is unique to the various villages and regions of the area, however, are traditional for clans and families.

During the tribal ceremonies, the uncle of the young boy dances with the elliptical-shaped board. After the ceremony, the board is then placed in a man’s house to guard the clan areas as well as the headhunting skull displays.

This gopi measures 56 inches tall and 11.5 inches wide.
