From the Kowiat village in the middle of the Sepik River, this tribal art piece is made from garamut wood, a very hard and heavy material.

Masks of the Kowiat village, a small community located a long walk off the river where the middle Sepik River starts at the village of Tambunum, are generally painted black. The heavy, slightly oily patina on this unique tribal artifact indicates its age and exposure to the elements. Circa 1970. It is 19.25 inches tall.
