This heavily painted yam mask is from the Abelam people in the Wosera area of Papua New Guinea.

Yam masks or “babamini” are used to decorate the male yams at harvest ceremonies. Masks are typically decorated with layers of natural pigments and repainted and reused in following years.

This heavily painted mask is a classic style from the Kamge area. It is pre-1980. Rituals associated with yams are a major part of the spiritual life of the Abelam people.

This yam mask measures 11.5 inches tall.
