Yam Masks or "Babamini", are made in the Wosera and Maprik areas of Papua New Guinea. These masks are ancestral spirit images used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the yam harvest festival. This beautiful open-design mask is circa 1968.

The Abelam people, more than any other New Guinea villages, maintain its traditional culture to a great degree because of the relative remoteness and dangers of entering the area.

This yam mask measures 14.5 inches tall and 9 inches wide.
