New Guinea Art – Woven Ancestor Clan Totem, #8966

This ancestor clan totem was made by a women from Kamanabit Village on the Sepik River using a gourd and woven bush twine. Woven and cane figures, called doli in tok pisin, are made in a number of New Guinea Sepik villages, however, most are well known in the villages of Mumeri and Kamanabit. The totems, an entity that watches over or assists a group of people, are used to teach clan stories and aid clan members through dreams and requests. This totem measures 12 inches tall. This cute guy is very patriotic, he has the letter PNG painted across his chest. And what a great smile. #8966 Woven Clan Ancestor, Mumeri Village, Krosmeri River, middle Sepik River area, Papua New Guinea
