New Guinea Art - Woven Pig Clan Totem, #8526 $75.00

New Guinea Art - Woven Pig Clan Totem, #8526

New Guinea villagers believed animal clan totems, such as this woven twine pig figure from the Mumeri Village of the middle Sepik River, were vehicles that guided the clan member through dreams and requests.

Many of the woven and cane figures, also called doli in tok pisin, represented wild pigs – a strong companion during a tribe member’s journey through the jungle.

Most of the figures here are woven out of twine over gourds. They are painted with clay and vegetable-based paints and decorated.

This totem measures 13.5 inches long and 6 inches tall.
