Men\'s House Clan Mask, Angoram Village, Papua New Guinea - 9060

Ancestor mask, Angoram Village, lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Most masks in New Guinea are not worn over the face but are hung in or outside ceremonial men’s houses or attached to large dance costumes. They can depict sprits or family, clan, & tribal ancestors-often with totemic animals on the forehead or chin. This one has two clan totems on it, a bird on the chin and the odd-looking creature on the forehead. Painted with clay and vegetable-based paints, trimmed with grasses. The mask itself is 29 inches long (not including the grass trim on the bottom). #9060
