  • Oceanic Accessory - Bilum Bag, #8069

Bilum bags, such as this one from the Sarakim Village of the Wosera area, are widely used accessories throughout New Guinea villages to carry a variety of items.

Traditionally, bilums are made of bush twine from the inner bark of tress, however, more contemporary string bags are also made from commercial twine.

These New Guinea bags are woven in a continuous figure-eight knotting techniques with colors added from grasses, orchid bark as well as natural and commercial dyes.

This bilum measures 16 inches wide at the widest part, although keep in mind these things expand greatly. The bag is 12 inches tall, not including the strap.
