Papua New Guinea Art – Clan Totem Woven Pig Clan, #8959 $35.00

Papua New Guinea Art – Clan Totem Woven Pig Clan, #8959

#8959 This pig clan totem, painted with clay and vegetable-based paints and decorated with two small shells, was made by women from the Mumeri Village of the Krosmeri River of the middle Sepik.

Woven and cane figures, also known as doll in tok pisin, are common artifacts in the villages of Mumeri and Kamanabit. Women craft these figures to teach clan stories and to aid clan members through dreams and requests.

Many of the totems represent bird and animal figures - wild pig totems, such as this one, are quite common. Wild pigs are strong and would be an asset in a tribal member’s journey through the jungle.

This totem measures 6 inches long
