Papua New Guinea Art – Rare Highlands Phallocrypt, #8545 $120.00

Unlike the elaborately decorated Sepik phallocrypts, this rare artifact from the Waghi Valley in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, is decorated simply by carving into the surface when the gourd is green.

These elegant gourds are a type of traditional men’s clothing, and are still worn on occasion and were certainly worn when this one was collected. This phallocrypt, collected in the 1960s.

The gourd measures 7 inches front to back, its belt is made with braided rattan and grass.
