Papuan Gulf Art - Gopi (Gope) Board, #7949 $135.00

Papuan Gulf Art - Gopi (Gope) Board, #7949

Gope boards, such as this one from the Purari Delta area of the Papuan Gulf region, are traditionally elliptical shaped and decorated with bright, abstract patterns.

Human faces, likely of ancestors, are also typically carved into the ceremonial tribal boards. The most sacred boards are large, named, and used during a young boy’s initiation. The boards are then used in a man’s house guard clan areas.

Smaller unnamed boards are owned by young uninitiated boys. Designs are traditional for clans and families with little room for artistic freedom. Styles are unique to various villages and regions of the area.

This gopi measures 33.5 inches tall and 7 inches wide.
