  • Toea shell necklace, Kamanabit Village, Papua New Guinea - #8206

Bush twine, girigiri shell, and toea shell necklace. This necklace was collected in Kamanabit village. The necklace itself is relatively new but the 17 toea shell money it is made with is very old. Toeas are the coinage of traditional New Guinea, if you will. The coins of modern Papua New Guinea are known as toea. The main unit of currency is the Kina which was originally a gold-lip mother of pearl shell.

This necklace is 18 inches long and fastened with a loop and shell.
