Tribal Artifact – Decorated Phallocrypt, #8211

Painted bush twine and shell ornament this phallocrypt made by the Iatmul people of the middle Sepik River villages of Mumeri and Kamanabit.

Phallocrypts are decorative sheaths made from the ends of dried gourds. The unique, sometimes elaborately designed gourds are a type of traditional men’s clothing still worn in some remote villages of New Guinea and Indonesia.

This gourd measures 8 inches from front to back with an opening diameter of 1.75 inches.
