  • Tribal Jewelry - Clamshell Bracelet, #8172

This exquisite clamshell band comes from the Sepik Coastal region of Papua New Guinea.

This traditional jewelry piece was made from bamboo and sand, its sheer surface texture comes from the shell and areas of mother of pearl.

Members of the coastal region work hard and long in creating these beautiful native artifacts. These native jewelry pieces, also called bilas, can be worn, but are also used as payment for bride prices and other debts.

This clamshell band, circa 1950s or earlier, measures roughly 4 inches in diameter.
