This contemporary New Guinea string bag features bright red, blue and orange coloring made from grasses, orchid bark as well as natural and commercial dyes.

Bilum bags are the universal carry-all of New Guinea from the Sepik to the Highlands from Papua New Guinea to Indonesian Papua used for everything medicine bags to baby carriers.

This exquisite string bag was recently exhibited in the show “The Ethereal World of Spirits: Tribal Art of New Guinea” held at the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

This bilum bag measures 44 inches wide at the widest part as shown in the photo, however, the string bags do expand. It is 18 inches tall, not including the strap.
