Tribal Art – Pig Totem, #8960

This pig clan totem was made by the women of the Mumeri Village in the middle Sepik River region. These New Guinea figures are believed to watch over and assist clan members. They are made in a number of Sepik villages, but are most well known in the villages of Mumeri and Kamanabit. The figures are woven out of twine over gourds, painted with clay and vegetable-based paints and often decorated with cassowary feathers and shells. This totem measures 8.5 inches long and 4.75 inches tall. #8960 Woven Clan Pig, Mumeri Village, Krosmeri River, middle Sepik River area, Papua New Guinea
