Batwinged Haiwe Meri Protector Figure, New Guinea. This middle Sepik River figure is known as a Haiwe Meri. You see them with and without bat wings. This is a moral figure kept and displayed in the Men’s House. She waits in the forest for young men who have rape on their minds. When she detects these men, she turns their evil thoughts against them and causes their death. (Haiwe means road or path and Meri means woman in “tok pigin.”) She is 29.75 inches across and 11 inches tall.
