Haiwe Meri Figure This is a moral figure that is kept and displayed in the Men’s House. She waits in the forest for young men who have rape on their minds. When she detects these men, she turns their evil thoughts against them and causes their death. (Meri means woman in pigin.) Iatmul tribe, Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. She is 30 inches by 14.5 inches. Village-made clay paints, trimmed with grass.
