Middle Sepik Haiwe Meri Women’s Protection Figure, Papua New Guinea. This is a moral figure kept and displayed in the Men’s House. She waits in the forest for young men who have rape on their minds. When she detects these men, she turns their evil thoughts against them and causes their death. (Haiwe means road or path and Meri means woman in “tok pigin.”) She is 23.5 inches across. Painted with village-made clay paints and decorated with grasses.
