Middle Sepik River Canoe Prow Mask, Papua New Guinea. Prow masks are mounted to the large palm spathe splashboards mounted on the fronts of canoes. They are powerful protectors of headhunting parties. This one is quite unusual in that it is painted mostly red, most are white with some red trim. It is 22 inches tall.
