Older West New Guinea Bilum. Bilums are woven in a unique continuous figure-eight knotting technique. They serve as pockets, purses, backpacks, grocery/game bags, baby carriers. They are used to store food, belongings, & ceremonial items. Virtually everyone in New Guinea carries one
I recently obtain some older bilums that have been in a collection for many years. They have all been used and show that. As you can see this old and well loved bilum has a couple of holes. But, these are such beautiful works of art I don’t mind. This one is very roughly 38 inches wide by 20 inches deep not counting the strap. This type really expands. They use this type to carry babies, young pigs, and firewood.
