Shell Money Necklace, Papua New Guinea. Shell money is still used in parts of New Guinea for brideprices and payback ceremonies. The smaller rings are known as toea. This toea is made of giant clam shell cut with bamboo and sand. You can see the way it is cut on the shell. It shows considerable age polish. It is strung on woven bush twine. The necklace is roughly 30 inches and the shell toea is 2 inches in diameter.
