Headhunter Trophy Skull Carving, Sepik River, New Guinea. Back when headhunting was common in New Guinea vanquished enemies’ heads were displayed on special racks or in little windows in the men’s houses. Now that it is illegal, so these carvings are made to substitute for real heads or skulls in ceremonies.
This carving is from Tambunum village, Iatmul people. It is 8.25 inches tall and is custom mounted.
