Product Description

The Andakara Dance Neckpiece is known in western literature as Karahut due to a linguistic misunderstanding, these represent an eternal masalai spirit handed down from and elder to a spiritual acolyte. The acolyte will make a new receptacle (andakara) and receive the spirit in ceremony.  The Andakara is a spirit of great power and leadership among spirits.  To “know” one is of much siginificance.

They are worn around the neck during ceremonies and dances either to the front or on the back. During special moments the dancer will sometimes clench it in his teeth to make himself look more fearsome. They are made of woven bush twine and decorated with shells, pig tusks, and paint.

This nicely painted Andakara is roughly 11 inches tall and comes with a custom stand
